The Energy Choice Coalition today joined over 20 associations representing commercial, industrial, and residential consumers in calling on Congress to expand and strengthen competitive wholesale electricity markets as it considers federal policy to improve the resiliency of the nation’s power grid.

As Congress considers policy solutions to address this most recent energy reliability crisis – while simultaneously working to jumpstart our economic recovery – we urge members to utilize all available levers to promote economic growth, grid reliability, job creation, climate solutions, and innovations that can lower electricity costs for the nation’s consumers.

Increasing access to data regarding electricity consumption and emissions for retail electricity suppliers would make it easier for customers to manage their energy usage and for system managers to deploy demand-side technologies, such as demand response and storage, to strengthen reliability.

“Expanding the role of independent transmission operators will increase supply competition and efficiency at the wholesale level. That’s good for all customers – both big and small,” said Robert Dillon, executive director of the Energy Choice Coalition. “Consumers want clean, reliable, and cost-effective sources of energy and they deserve a voice in the selection of those resources. Encouraging greater competition in wholesale markets and access to energy usage data can help deliver the energy choice consumers want.”
